The elusive Invaders #8

This was the last missing issue in my run of 1975-76 Invaders. Evelyn
helped me look at every vendor at ECCC. Found it! They are saying
Union Jack makes an appearance in the new Avengers movie, so these
have been getting scooped up lately.

Hunting for old books is fun. So was day 2 of ECCC 2012.

1968 Nick Fury

Agent of SHIELD with the famous Steranko cover. Very groovy. I've
always wanted one of these. And now I have one!

ECCC12 day 2

And Eve is losing it! Just kidding. Sell out crowd today. Busiest I
have ever seen it. Must find coffee......

Geeking Out on Hickman's Fantastic Four

The comic news sites say the Jonathan Hickman will stop writing Fantastic Four soon.  I feel sorry for the writer that has to come in after this 3-year run because Hickman has literally been “fantastic”.

He really brought the family dynamics of the group to the forefront of every story.  These aren’t just super-powered heroes who happen to be a family—The Fantastic Four is a Family who happens to have super powers to add to their list of challenges.  And believe me, having super powers doesn’t make it any easier to raise brilliant but precocious children, or to deal with the loss of a family member.

If you haven’t read any of Hickman’s run of Fantastic Four, you need to read the books to have any idea why I find them so exceptional.  Maybe its because I am a dad and a husband that I find this series so relevant and meaningful.  But I think a lot of it is due to the skill of JH as a writer and his ability to craft scripts that get the most out of the brilliant artists he has worked with over the life of this series.

Man, I just dig it that when it comes down to it, the Fantastic Four choose family first and still manage to save the world.  And this last issue was just loaded with Galactus-level cosmic powered fun that has not really been seen since Jack Kirby drew the book back in the 60s.  The Kirby Krackle was flying the last couple of issues and at the center of it all was a brave pair of parents trying to do the best they could for their kids and kids doing everything they could to help out their parents
.

Three Cheers for Jonathan Hickman’s run on Fantastic Four.  It goes down with Lee-Kirby and Jack Byrne’s runs as one of the best periods of creative excellence for the residents of the Baxter Building.

Geek note: If Galactus is the Herald of Franklin now, is that going to bring some fundamental change to who Galactus is and what he does?  Or will Marvel just say, Galactus’ debt to Franklin has been repaid—Do not call on me again!  And the things go back to the way they were?  That and I don’t think the Franklin genie will go back in the bottle now.  So I am curious to see what happens now after the mega events of the last few issues.  Did I say, Wow already!!?  Wow!!!

3 Days Left to Wait...

We know the Show is gonna be great!  It was great last year!  It's gonna be great this year.
But how can we wait through the anticipation of these last few days before Comicon Starts?
OK, OK!  You're right.  We can wait 3 more days.
We can spend our remaining time getting our costumes and gear ready.
We can check the schedule of panels and events one more time.
But what are we gonna do when we DO get to the show?
We can do that!
We who are about to Geek Out, salute you!

New Mini Comic Mini Announcement

Hey, I just wrote and illustrated a new Mini Comic.
That's right, a real comic.
You can read it online at LarsenGeekery.com

It's not a monstrosity!  It's a mini comic.  I doesn't even have any monsters (except flying monkeys) or even bad guys in it.
And there is only ONE VOLCANO in the whole thing and it's not the focus of the comic.  It's even dormant--hasn't erupted in thousands of years.
Oh, just go read it already.  You can't complain about it if you haven't even read it yet!

New Duds? Or just Duds?

So, should the wife and I wear these new costumes I designed to the Emerald City ComiCon?  Only 11 days till the show.

Easy there, Darkseid.  I didn't think so either.  I was just trying to draw a funny picture.
That's alright.  It must be tough being the Lord of Apokolips.  But did you think my drawing was funny?
Who says, Darkseid has no sense of humor?  Besides the Justice League?

The Question of Little Blue Men

I really like the new Wolverine and the X-Men comic series from Marvel.
But what is up with the Bamfs?
Where did these little blue guys come from?

Mystical spawn of Kurt Wagner aka Nightcrawler?
Or invading Nac Mac Feegle (Wee Free Men) from Terry Pratchett's Discworld?
I'm sure I don't know, but maybe the writers at Marvel will let us know soon?

I saw the new movie John Carter.  It was great.
I wrote a review over at LarsenGeekery.com (click to read it).

Just like when I was a kid reading the Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars, steals the show.

I am delighted that Disney's horrible marketing haven't ruined the movie, but it was directed by a Pixar veteran.  And Pixar seems to be the only source of good Disney films these days (and Marvel I hope, looking ahead to The Avengers).

Comic Mashup of Mars

Some where on Earth there is a movie about a man who may or may not be of Mars, who meets a woman who may or may not be a Princess of Mars.  The marketing experts thought it would be too much of a gambit to put such information in the title of their movie, so they just called it: John Carter.
Comic Mashup Theater proudly presents, the Search for the John.

This Lars of Mars will be in a theater this weekend watching John Carter and I will be appending "of Mars" and "A Princess of Mars" to the title in defiance of the cowardly marketing people at Disney.
And I will be praying that the movie is much better than the marketing has been.
To Barsoom!!!

Larsen Geekery: Crusading Comics Couple

I wrote a piece about a real life husband and wife comic book team over at Larsen Geekery: Crusading Comics Couple: Geeking Out About Terry and Rachel Dodson.
That's a picture the Dodsons drew of Spiderman and Black Cat being a super couple.  There is a picture of the real Dodsons as well.
