Singing For My Supper
All Hail our Economic Overlords!
I have been too busy singing for my supper
To be drawing pictures and blogging nonsense
Although the pictures and words I compose for my masters
Are some pretty strange nonsense some days
But at least they are still paying this piper
So until the lazy days return
I offer up this atomic soft serve
Humble pie, free of associations
Light as a feather
Echo, echo, echoic
Egalitarian
Utilitarian
None such
Nonsense

Do Cowgirls Dream of Efficient Asset Allocation?
An appropriate investment modelGives a girl comfort
And pretax savings
That makes a painless rollover
A guaranteed part
Of your short-term horizon*

*All investment schemes involve risk.
You should consider all the factors before making important decisions.
Past performance is no guarantee of future performance.
Besides, she just may not be that into you.

Echoes: Don’t ask me—Ask Google.
I know it has no pentameter, but that is no reason to downgrade my verse.
And you know it’s a collage.
So if you walk out that door, you will never find free verse or collage like this again.
I’m just saying.

Like Clockwork
Academic discussionsQuickly become political battles
With interest waning
But oh so firmly entrenched
We get told that Alice
Will take her ball and go home
If we don’t smash the machine
To prove that it used to work
What a tantrum
What an unnecessary increase in volume
With no increase in content
Or in reason
Crash goes the crystal
Sprung goes the spring
Grind all the gears
Punch up the volume
Bring on the tears
Like Clockwork

The Trials of Horacio Bacon
There were just some thingsWith which Horacio Bacon
Would not put up
One of which
As a matter of principle
Was the condescending look
On the face of that youngster
Lieutenant Hughes Grant
Recently transferred
From some colonial outpost
Where it could not be expected
That manners and decorum
Would be transmitted
With the requisite vigor
And sacred solemnity
With which it had always been
Applied to the knuckles
And bared backsides
Of deserving young men
Fortunate enough to find themselves
Being raised within the warm embrace
Of institutions of learning
Where discipline is the paramount
Duty and responsibility
Of all members of the august faculty
Within those hallowed halls
Deep within the brave heart
Of proper industry and culture
Which is and always will be
The blessed empire
Long may she persevere
In a world increasingly afflicted
By backwater ignorance
And lazy no good insolence
Like that projected
By the smug countenance
Of Lieutenant Hughes Grant
Upon the undeserving
But decidedly superior
Brow of Horace Bacon
Of whom it must be said
By those who chronicle such things
In these degenerate times
Bore it without complaint

Relations of Reynard
Bottom jaw jutting out like a llamaTeeth protruding like a, well like a llama
Reynard regards regal rectangles
Surrounded by plastic chairs
Retard! He screams at himself
Startling the starlings and crows
Who circle and cry, circle and cry
Complaining of finding themselves
Back on that endless wheel of pain
That torture of endless torment
Which can only be accurately called
By one name, one heartless noun
One subject, one object,
One dreaded event
Inevitable as well as unavoidable
FAMILY REUNION
Slowly the crows and starlings
Settle back onto the wires
Staring steely stares
The cousins and uncles
Step mothers and aunts
Shovel green Jell-O
Onto sagging yellow paper plates
Retard! They scream at Reynard
Grab a plate before the ambrosia is all gone
Bottom jaw jutting out like a llama
Teeth protruding like a, well like a llama
Reynard vows never to attend
A reunion again

Jell-O brought to you by family reunions everywhere
Where people are swimming you should shout,
Watch Out, There Are Llamas!!

Herr Eksen's Sind Brygge
Herr Eksen’s mind often concoctsImages of chorus lines dancing
As he plays dodge the curb
And squints into oncoming headlights
Oh, if his wife only knew
What a brew
What a wonderful stew
That spin the tires round and round
Handling curves of road and mind
While gripping the wheel so tight
Lay off the horn, Herr Eksen
Stay within the lines
The way you drive, Sir
Bends all the rules, Sir
Sind Brygge Lane is not wide
There really is no stopping
Herr Eksen when his mind
Is so thoroughly stewed in brew
Thank god he drives mostly at night
When pedestrians are few
The chorus girls are many
But pedestrians are few
---------------------------------
Echoes: Poem and Collage by Jay Larsen
"Sind brygge" = Danish "mind brew"
Sung to the tune of Auld Lang Zinger
And NO, I am not condoning drinking and driving

Blind Devotion
Get out of the kitchenTurn up the heat
Get out of the kitchen
Vampires can't be beat
by blind faith
or devotional porn
Get out of the kitchen
There's too much red meat

Super Powered Language

Don’t take too long
To get to the conflict
You run the risk
Of losing the younger audience
Don’t be afraid
To cut and jump
Like a kangaroo razor
With super powered language
Death takes no holidays
Today is your day
To master the art of
SPLANG!

Tell Me Something

Tell me something
I can’t possibly know
Conceive a concept
I can’t comprehend
Do something
I can’t possibly do
Amaze me
De jade me
Make my ego die laughing
So that I/Eye am no longer
A thing
Just a node
In the network of
The unknowable concept of no doing
Amazing

Clear Loop

This is not cutting edge tech
But the blood continues to flow
Clearly we are in a loop
We have not fully realized
The lengths to which
These loop gurus will go
Clearly we are in a loop
Go guru, go
Clearly we are
Loop guru
Clear
Loop
Clear
Loop
But the blood continues to flow
Clearly we are in a loop
We have not fully realized
The lengths to which

Clearly we are in a loop
Go guru, go
Clearly we are
Loop guru

Baseline Pivot

Abnormal is the new standard
Fifteen minutes no longer
Defines fame
Broken becomes the baseline
Chrome plated plastic
Our reference frame
Looking forward life is full of choices
Casting backward there was no choice at all
Everything happened as it had to
So what do we do
With these current dilemmas?
Pivot the point of perspective
Swivel the hips of fate
Oh so normal this baseline disaster
Let’s see how big a mess we can make
Fifteen minutes no longer
Defines fame
Broken becomes the baseline
Chrome plated plastic
Our reference frame
Looking forward life is full of choices
Casting backward there was no choice at all
Everything happened as it had to
So what do we do
With these current dilemmas?
Pivot the point of perspective

Progress Making Progress
I am proud to announceThat progress has been made
In our long running campaign
To raise the frustration levels
In this great country of ours
Over the lack of progress
In the crucial and vital area
Of frustration reduction
Any questions?

Range to Target
Captain Ramius perplexes
The usually solid Vasili
Say what you mean
Say what you really mean
Captain, may I respectfully require
That you say
What
You mean
Say what you mean
Captain
Jack Ryan can’t save you now
If you don’t
Say what you mean
Captain
Say what you mean

Ode to the Benin Empire, Baby

The Bini people lived
Under the Kings of the Sky
And founded their city of Benin
They flew their decapitation flag
With a warrior’s pride
Until crushed by a Punitive Expedition
By the British in 1897
High Tide and Green Grass
Brought double questions from
The Rolling Stones
Have you seen your mother, baby,
Standing in the Shadows?
And, Who’s driving your plane?
Neither track has been played live
By a Stone, since 1966
Although Mick played it once
At a solo show in 1993

Modern Indulgence

I’m not going to talk about this
I didn’t invent the alphabet
I did not discover utility
I cannot wear such a hat
I cannot act with impunity
I did not give you that look
I’m not going to talk about this
I didn’t invent the alphabet
I did not discover utility
I cannot wear such a hat
I cannot act with impunity
I did not give you that look
I’m not going to talk about this

Lunar Rover

There was an unexpected commotion
In the carport early this morning
Commerce dictated conference connections
But the dog was barking
Wings beat frantically around my head
Terror threatened to spill my travel mug
On the cold concrete of early autumn
But it was only a wood pecker
Sheltering beneath the tin roof
Trying to escape a cold downpour
A rain so severe even I did not want to drive in it
After several heartbeats
Thrum, thrum, thrum
We both regained our equilibrium
Bird and man, staring eye to eye
As we shared a frosty moment
I marveled at woodpecker’s red and black feathers
Perhaps he wondered at my thinning hair
Quiet dog, quit your barking
It’s just an unexpected commotion
In the carport early this morning
No need to wake the others
In the carport early this morning
Commerce dictated conference connections
But the dog was barking
Wings beat frantically around my head
Terror threatened to spill my travel mug
On the cold concrete of early autumn
