WDWK about YouTube?
Q: What do we know about YouTube?
A: You Tube is a virtual space where people can post videos. Lots of people post lots of videos. I have posted videos at YouTube. You may have posted videos at YouTube. But let's face it, most of the videos at YouTube are stupid and shouldn't have been shared. Really, you know who you are. Keep those damn usless videos to yourself.
But every once in a while, I see a video on YouTube that renues my faith and makes me say, "Yes, by Al Gore and all the Saints of Cyberspace, this is why we have YouTube!"
Behold, a gem. Corporate TV would never give us this example of cleverness. I have watched it 4 times now and it is still funny. Thank you Jared Pike.

Heads Will Roll Video
The Thunder Echo Ensemble has been back in the studio.
Good things are brewing and there is talk about a new album although there are no schedules yet. Just good jams.
Here is a sneak peak for my 23 loyal fans.
It's a story about hitting the road and seeing what you might find.

Godzilla Goes To The Opera
Rabbit looked at me over the top of his Ray Bans and smiled.
"Despite Robot's reputation as an original thinker, I can tell you that none of us has had a truly original thought in ages, if ever."
But before I could ask him what he meant, the first limo pulled up to the curb and Rabbit swung into action, greeting the guests one by one.
"Ladies, it is wonderful to have you here this evening. Please take a complimentary program and wait in the lobby. Refreshments are being served, and the great green beast from Tokyo will be with you soon. He has been temporarily delayed by the futile attacks of the Air Force, but I can hear him approaching the city from the harbor now."
I caught Robot spying on us from the roof of the building across the street as the theatre filled with patrons.
"I will be blogging this!" Robot yelled, waving a metal fist in the air and snapping pictures with his camera phone.
"See what I mean?" Rabbit replied, "That box of bolts just doesn't understand the demands of true artistic expression. He has reduced the whole thing to simple journalism. Any dolt can echo the thunder, but it takes genius to produce real lightning."
Rabbit shook his fist at Robot and yelled above the wail of the sirens announcing the arrival of the main attraction.
"Go charge your batteries, you monster!"
Godzilla stopped at the painted tape, threw his cape over one shoulder causing an attack jet to spin out of control.
"Don't these people know who I am?" he rumbled.
"Pay no attention to them, Maestro," Rabbit soothed. "You have a full house tonight, and your claws look fantastic. Did you get a manicure?"

Something Old in a New Way
My brother told me a while back that he wanted me to record some of my poetry. I didn't jump right up and do it then, but the idea has been echoing around ever since. Recently I thought I might give it try. This means recording things and then finding a way to post them. After some struggle I recorded one of my things and made a video out of it, which I posted to YouTube. None of this was a easy as it ought to be, but I eventually got through it. I know, it is embarrassing for a professional tech geek to admit that he has trouble with technology, but I do.
So here is my first Audio Blog (posted as a video because I couldn't find a way to just post audio files on Blogger). Let me know what you think so I can decide if it is worth the effort to make more.

Don't Show This To My Dog
My dog Ricky (that's short for Ricochet) wants to play fetch 24 hours a day.
If she saw this video she would wouldn't stop whining until she got an automated ball thrower of her own. So do not show her this video. But you should watch it, because you have self control (do what I say). You are responsible for your own actions (watch the video!).

There are a few behind-the-scenes things about the video that are important to note. The first is that it really does seem to have been done independently from the campaign. Democrats have a much, much deeper bench of creative talent on all sides (music, film, advertising) and it's always freely offered, but the campaigns are typically very cautious about encouraging such efforts (cautionary tale: Kerry '04). I heard from a source inside the Obama campaign that they've had many offers for explicit celebrity support that have been gently discouraged (see the wisdom of George Clooney here). Who knows what might have happened if the campaign had been asked, but numerous sources from inside the campaign say that, nope, they learned about it when they saw it online (literally, from one staffer: "Supporters of ours independently produced it. Have to say, though, that it was pretty cool when we saw it online."). Another campaign insider not on staff learned of it via email forward. "The whole campaign has encouraged volunteers to take the initiative and make a difference — host a fundraiser, debate party, post policy ideas," he said. "Here's an example of that extended to the celebrity realm."That's the official campaign position, in any case: A link to the video was included in a campaign email this afternoon from John Kerry, who said the video "came from the bottom up, not the top down, created by people who have been touched by this campaign."
